How this works

This calculator is pure geometry — perimeter and area math from the dimensions you enter — so it carries a different sourcing bar than most of this site. Framing lumber scales with the coop's wall perimeter (studs plus top and bottom plates); hardware cloth scales with the total wall, roof and buried-skirt area; fasteners scale roughly with total linear footage of cloth edge. None of that is a biological fact to source, so treat the outputs as a solid starting estimate, not an exact bill of materials — real builds always lose some material to cuts and mistakes at seams. Add 10–15% to both the lumber and hardware cloth totals to cover that.

The one number here that IS extension-sourced: Virginia Cooperative Extension's poultry housing publication recommends burying hardware cloth 12 inches deep around the run's border, with the buried section toed outward — a predator that starts digging at the fence line hits wire before it gets under, instead of tunnelling straight down and coming up inside the run. That's where the "buried skirt" figure below comes from.

Everything else — 1/2-inch hardware cloth as the mesh size, pressure-treated 2x4 framing — is widely-repeated predator-proofing and construction-community consensus, not a number any university extension publication we checked actually states (Virginia Tech's own housing guide, read directly, specifies neither). Chicken wire is explicitly NOT a substitute: its openings are large enough for raccoons to reach through and small predators to pass through entirely, which defeats the point of building a secure run at all.

A worked example

Say your coop is 6×8 ft with 6 ft walls, and the run is 10×15 ft with a 6 ft fence and a roof over the top (hawks are a real risk where you live). The coop's wall perimeter is 2×(6+8) = 28 ft, so framing comes to roughly 28 × 3 = 84 linear ft of 2x4. The run's perimeter is 2×(10+15) = 50 ft. Hardware cloth covers the coop walls (28 ft × 6 ft = 168 sq ft), the run walls (50 ft × 6 ft = 300 sq ft), the roof (10 × 15 = 150 sq ft), and the buried skirt (50 ft × 1 ft = 50 sq ft) — 668 sq ft total. Round up and buy a little extra for the seams.

What size hardware cloth should I use for a chicken run?

What lumber should I use for the coop frame?
Pressure-treated lumber is the standard choice for anything touching the ground (base and floor framing) since it resists rot and insects; framing above ground can be regular dimensional lumber. 2x4s for studs and plates is the typical size for a small backyard coop frame. These are general building-practice recommendations, not extension-sourced figures.
How much extra material should I buy beyond the calculator estimate?
Add 10-15% to the hardware cloth and lumber totals for cuts, mistakes, and overlap at seams — the estimate here is based on clean geometry (perimeter and area), and real builds always lose some material to waste. Buying exactly to the estimate usually means a second trip to the store.
Do I need to cover the run roof too?
If hawks or owls are a risk in your area, yes — aerial predators can take birds straight out of an open-top run. Hardware cloth, aviary netting, or deer netting over the top all work; the calculator adds the run's full floor area to your hardware cloth total when you include a roof.
