Why heat is more dangerous to chickens than cold
Unlike humans, chickens cannot sweat. They rely entirely on panting (evaporative cooling through their breath) and radiating heat from their unfeathered combs, wattles, and legs. When ambient temperatures exceed 85°F (29°C), their ability to cool themselves degrades rapidly — especially in high humidity.
Heat stress causes appetite loss, egg drops, thin or soft eggshells (due to rapid loss of blood carbon dioxide while panting), and in severe cases (over 100°F), heat stroke and sudden flock mortality.
How the Heat Index calculation works
This calculator adapts the NOAA Heat Index formula for poultry. High relative humidity prevents evaporative panting from working effectively. For instance, an air temperature of 90°F at 70% humidity feels like 106°F to a hen's body.
Five practical summer cooling steps
- Deep Shade: Place waterers in 100% full shade. Direct sun adds ~10°F to the heat load.
- Chilled Water & Electrolytes: Chickens will not drink warm water. Add ice blocks and poultry electrolytes to replace lost body salts.
- Frozen Summer Treats: Offer chilled watermelon, frozen cucumber slices, or ice blocks with berries. Avoid high-protein scratch corn before nightfall (digesting corn generates internal body heat).
- Cross-Ventilation: Open all coop windows and vents. Install solar or battery-powered fans near ceiling vents to pull out hot air.
- Shallow Water Dip: In an emergency (a bird prostrate on its side with pale comb), gently dip the bird up to its neck in a bucket of cool (not ice-cold) water.
