A typical backyard flock
Twelve hens supports 1–2 roosters — most small backyard flocks are comfortable with just one. A commercial-scale breeder flock of 100 hens is where the range really shows its work: 8–10 roosters, which lines up exactly with the "7 to 9 per 100 hens" figure University of Georgia Poultry Science publishes.
How this works
The range comes from one publication: University of Georgia's Department of Poultry Science, "Natural Mating and Fertilization" (Jeanna Wilson, Extension Poultry Scientist), which states that 7 to 9 roosters per 100 hens will usually net good fertility results. Flip that around and it is roughly 11 to 14 hens per rooster — 100 ÷ 9 ≈ 11.1 on the crowded end, 100 ÷ 7 ≈ 14.3 on the sparse end. That is the range this calculator applies to your flock size.
What makes this one number worth trusting for two different questions — fertility and flock harmony — is that the same publication explains both directions of getting it wrong. Go above the range (too many roosters for the hen count) and young or smaller hens start avoiding the area where the roosters gather, which cuts fertility rather than helping it, on top of the fighting that a crowded rooster pen brings. Go below the range (too few roosters) and a rooster tends to favor a subset of hens and largely ignore the rest, so some hens' eggs are reliably fertile and others almost never are. The 11–14 window is the zone extension guidance says avoids both failure modes — not just the fertility-optimal point.
We deliberately do not publish a breed-by-breed ratio table, even though breed obviously matters in practice — a laid-back Silkie rooster and an assertive Leghorn rooster do not need identical hen counts. No university extension source we could find quantifies that difference, and the per-breed numbers circulating online trace back to hatchery marketing copy, not research. If your flock's breed runs unusually docile or unusually aggressive, treat the 11–14 range as a starting point and watch for the two warning signs above rather than trusting a borrowed number.
Do you even need a rooster?
Only if you want fertile eggs. Hens lay on their own schedule regardless of whether a rooster is present — a rooster's only job, egg-wise, is fertilizing them for hatching. If you are keeping hens purely for eating eggs, this calculator (and a rooster at all) is optional; plenty of backyard keepers, especially anywhere with a noise ordinance, run rooster-free flocks with no loss of egg production.
A worked example
You have 25 hens and want to add roosters for hatching eggs. 25 ÷ 14 ≈ 1.8, rounded up to 2 — your floor. 25 ÷ 11 ≈ 2.3, rounded up to 3 — your ceiling. So 2 to 3 roosters covers the flock without either failure mode: 2 is enough that no rooster is stretched across too many hens, and 3 stays short of crowding roosters onto too few. Most keepers at this flock size land on 2 and watch for uneven fertility before adding a third.

- Uneven fertility. A single rooster in a large flock tends to favor a subset of hens and largely ignore the rest, so some hens' eggs are reliably fertile and others almost never are — rather than the whole flock getting even coverage.
- Does breed affect the ratio?
- Yes, in general terms — more aggressive, high-drive breeds typically need fewer roosters per hen than calmer breeds, and body condition matters too (a rooster in better condition mates more actively and needs fewer hens per rooster to keep up). There is no extension-published table of ratios by breed, though, so treat the 11–14 range as your starting point and watch your own flock for the signs above.
- Can I keep multiple roosters together?
- Often, yes, especially in a flock large enough to give each rooster his own hens and space — bachelor groups of roosters with no hens present can also get along. Two roosters crowded onto a handful of hens is the combination most likely to end in real fighting.
