Bumblefoot in Chickens
A swollen footpad with a dark scab is the end of the story, not the start. The bit that matters is what broke the skin — because until you fix that, it comes back.

Almost every bumblefoot article walks you through a procedure: soak the foot, soften the scab, cut out the kernel, pack it, bandage it. We are not going to, and it is worth being upfront about the reason rather than leaving you wondering.
The Merck Veterinary Manual's entry on pododermatitis gives no treatment protocol at all. It describes the condition, who gets it, and how it starts — and the only control measure it names is prevention: "good litter management is important in controlling footpad injuries to prevent bumblefoot."
That absence is informative. A footpad has tendons and a joint immediately beneath a thin layer of tissue, and cutting into an infected pad can drive infection deeper into the joint, where it becomes considerably harder to resolve. Plenty of keepers do it and report success, and that is genuinely their experience — but it is not the same thing as a documented treatment, and we would be inventing authority we do not have.
What this page does instead is tell you what the sources do support: how to recognise it, what caused it, and how to stop it recurring — which is the part that actually determines the outcome.
What it is and who gets it
Bumblefoot is pododermatitis — a staphylococcal infection of the footpad. Merck describes swollen footpads and limping as the common clinical signs, and says it is "often precipitated by injuries that allow contamination of subcutaneous tissue in the footpad".
So the sequence is: something breaks or bruises the skin, bacteria that are ordinarily present get underneath it, and the infection walls itself off into the hard dark plug that keepers recognise. By the time you can see the scab, the injury happened a while ago.
Merck also notes it is "more common in heavier birds and in males", which fits the mechanism exactly — more weight lands harder. In backyard terms that means Orpingtons, Jersey Giants, Brahmas and roosters are over-represented, and a heavy hen dropping off a high roost onto packed ground is the classic case.
How to spot it early
The single most useful habit: when you handle a bird for any reason, turn her over and look at the soles of her feet. Most bumblefoot is found late because nobody looks until the bird is limping, and by then the infection is established.
- Earliest sign: a reddened or slightly shiny patch on the pad, or a small break in the skin. Fixable by changing the environment alone.
- Established: a firm dark scab, usually central on the pad, with some swelling around it.
- Advanced: the whole pad or toe swollen, heat in the foot, obvious limping, or reluctance to stand or come off the roost. This is a vet case, not a watch-and-wait.

Find the injury source — this is the actual fix
Every one of these is something you can inspect this afternoon, and fixing them is what stops the next case:
- Roost height. A heavy bird jumping down four feet onto packed earth lands hard, every morning. Lower the roost, or give her something to step down onto.
- Roost width and finish. Wide and flat beats narrow and round — a 2×4 laid flat side up is the usual backyard answer. Check for splinters and sand them off.
- Wet litter. Damp bedding softens the skin of the pad and makes it far easier to break. The patch under the waterer is where a disproportionate number of these start.
- Litter depth. Merck's named control is litter management. Penn State recommends keeping litter 4 inches deep, and University of Minnesota goes to 6 inches for cold weather — deep enough to cushion a landing. Our bedding calculator works out the bags.
- Anything sharp at foot level. Protruding staples, cut edges of hardware cloth, wire flooring, gravel.
If several birds have it at once, stop looking at the birds and look at the enclosure. Bumblefoot does not pass from chicken to chicken, so multiple cases mean a shared environmental cause — and fixing the coop addresses all of them simultaneously.
When to involve a vet
Don't wait if the foot is hot or badly swollen, if the swelling extends up into the toes or the hock, if the bird will not stand or bear weight, or if she is losing condition. A localised infection that has reached the joint is a different problem from a scab on the pad, and it is not one that improves with patience.
Worth knowing: a vet may well prescribe an antibiotic and may well debride the lesion. That is a very different proposition from doing it yourself, because they can assess the depth, manage pain, and keep it sterile. Merck notes antimicrobials are used for systemic staphylococcal infection — which is a decision that needs a diagnosis behind it.
A worked example
A three-year-old Buff Orpington hen — a heavy breed — has started hanging back when the flock free-ranges, and sits down more than the others. Turn her over: a firm dark scab in the middle of the left footpad, with mild swelling around it.
Now walk the coop rather than the bird. The roost is a round branch about four feet up, and the floor beneath it is bare packed dirt with a thin scatter of shavings. There is a damp patch by the waterer. That is three causes in one look: a heavy bird, a hard drop onto an unpadded floor, and softened skin from the wet patch.
The plan: lower the roost and replace the branch with a 2×4 flat side up, move the waterer off the bedding or put it on a draining base, and get 6 inches of dry shavings down. Then ring the vet about the foot itself — because the environmental fix stops the next one, and the vet deals with the one she already has.
Fix only the foot, and she lands on the same packed dirt tomorrow morning.
