How to Winterize a Chicken Coop
Six jobs, best done in October while the weather is still dry. Most of them are about keeping the coop dry rather than keeping it warm — which is the opposite of what instinct suggests.

The principle behind the whole list
Before the checklist, the idea that makes it make sense: you are not trying to make the coop warm. You are trying to make it dry and still.
Chickens are well equipped for cold and badly equipped for damp. They exhale moisture all night and their droppings are roughly three-quarters water, so a sealed coop turns into a humid box — and humid air freezing on comb tissue is what causes frostbite. Every instinct says close it up. Almost every instinct is wrong.
1. Sort the ventilation — high, not low
The one job worth doing properly. You want openings above the birds' heads, at the ridge or in the gable ends, so warm damp air rises and leaves. University of Maine Extension's winter guidance works out to roughly 12 square inches of high open vent per bird — so 8 birds want about 96 square inches up high, a little under 0.67 square feet.
A number you will see everywhere, which you should ignore: "1 square foot of vent per 10 square feet of floor." We went looking for a source for it — through Virginia Tech's housing publication, poultry.extension.org's ventilation article, and Kentucky's housing guides — and it is in none of them. The blog usually credited with it calls it bogus. The only published figure of that shape is University of Kentucky AEN-161's 6 square inches of inlet per 25 square feet of floor, and read in context that is a winter minimum for an adjustable system, not a target to build to. 2. Block drafts at roost height
The counterpart to step 1, and the reason "more ventilation" is not the whole answer. A draft is air moving across the birds where they sleep, peeling away the warm layer they have trapped in their feathers. Ventilation is air leaving above them. Same air, different height, completely different effect on a chicken.
Go into the coop at roost level on a windy evening and feel for moving air — gaps in siding, around the pop door, under the eaves at bird height. Block those. Leave everything above the birds open.
3. Deep, dry bedding
Penn State Extension's year-round guidance is to keep litter 4 inches deep and remove wet litter. University of Minnesota Extension, writing specifically about cold weather, goes further: "deeply bed the coop with 4 to 6 inches of straw or shavings" — so 6 inches is the sourced winter figure.
Bedding does two jobs at once here: it insulates the floor, and it absorbs the moisture that would otherwise raise the humidity. Which is why wet bedding is worse than none — it has stopped absorbing and started evaporating. Our bedding calculator works out how many bags that is for your coop.
Note this is not the "deep litter method" quoted online at 8–18 inches. We could not find an extension source for those depths, so we do not repeat them.
4. Check the roosts are wide and flat
Cheap, quick, and genuinely effective. On a wide flat roost a hen sits down over her own feet and covers her toes with her breast feathers. On a narrow round perch she has to grip, and her toes stay wrapped around cold wood in the open air. A 2×4 laid flat side up is the usual backyard answer for standard breeds.
While you are in there: roosts should be higher than the nest boxes, or the birds will sleep in the boxes and you will spend winter cleaning droppings out of them.
5. Solve water before you need to
Frozen water is the winter failure most likely to actually cost you eggs, and October is when you test the heated base — not the first 20°F morning. Whatever method you pick, the standard it has to meet is Penn State's: hens must not go more than 12 hours without water or laying drops or stops.

6. Decide about light — separately from everything else
Winterizing the coop and lighting the coop are different decisions and get confused constantly. Winterizing is about the birds' welfare; supplemental light is purely about whether you want eggs through the dark months, and it is genuinely optional. What not to bother with
- Wrapping the coop in plastic sheeting. It stops the wind and it also stops the vapour, so you have built a humidity trap. If you wrap the run for wind shelter, leave the coop's own vents clear.
- Insulating, for most backyard coops. Deep dry bedding does more, and insulation tempts people to close vents. If you do insulate, cover it — chickens peck exposed foam.

A worked example
An 8-bird flock in a 4×8 coop, mid-October, first freeze forecast in three weeks.
Ventilation first: 8 birds want about 96 square inches of high vent, so the gable vents get opened and the hardware cloth over them checked. Then the opposite job — an evening walk-through at roost height finds moving air around the pop door frame, which gets weatherstripped. The 32 square feet of floor gets 6 inches of fresh shavings. The round branch roost gets replaced with a 2×4 flat side up. The heated waterer base comes out of the shed and gets plugged in and tested now, while it is still 50°F and a failure is an inconvenience rather than an emergency.
Total: an afternoon, no heater, and a coop that is dry and still rather than warm and damp.

- Before the first hard freeze, which in most of the US means working through the list in October. The reason to be early rather than exact is that the two jobs that matter most — sorting ventilation and getting dry bedding down — are much easier in dry autumn weather than in sleet, and a heated waterer you have already tested is better than one you unbox at 20°F. Autumn is also when the flock is molting, so it is the worst possible time to be doing noisy construction around them.
- Do I need to insulate a chicken coop?
- For most backyard flocks, no — and insulation becomes actively harmful if it tempts you to close the vents. Healthy adult chickens handle cold well; what they handle badly is humidity. Deep dry bedding on the floor does more for a flock than wall insulation, because it insulates where the heat is actually lost and absorbs moisture at the same time. If you do insulate, cover it: chickens will peck exposed foam or fibreglass.
