Fall & Winter Chicken Care
Between September and March a backyard flock stops laying, loses its feathers, and has to be kept dry rather than warm. Here is every part of that, in the order it happens.

The one idea that explains most of it
Nearly every winter mistake comes from treating cold as the problem. It usually is not. Healthy adult chickens handle cold well — they grew a fresh set of feathers in autumn specifically for it. What they handle badly is damp, and a coop sealed up to keep the warmth in is a coop full of the moisture the birds breathe out all night.
So the goal for winter is a coop that is dry and still, not warm: open above the birds so damp air leaves, closed at roost height so no air blows across them. Get that right and most of the rest is routine.

Almost every winter problem is a job done too late — a heated waterer unboxed at 20°F, a light ramp started in December, bedding laid in sleet. The order matters more than the detail.
- September — Watch for the molt starting
- Feathers begin appearing under the roost and the egg count slides. Nothing to fix — check that it is a molt and not mites, and move the flock onto a higher-protein ration while they re-feather.
- October — Winterize the coop while it is still dry
- The big work month. Open the high vents, block drafts at roost height, get 6 inches of dry bedding down, swap round perches for flat ones — and test the heated waterer now, while a failure is an inconvenience rather than an emergency.
- November — Start the light ramp, if you are lighting
- Natural daylight crosses below 14 hours across most of the US this month, which is the point at which supplemental light starts to matter. Ramp gradually and add the hours before sunrise, never after sunset.
- December — Water, water, water
- The shortest days and the first sustained freezes. The job now is simply making sure nobody goes 12 hours without liquid water — that limit is what protects the laying you spent October setting up.
- January — Watch combs and humidity
- Deepest cold. Check large single combs on hard-freeze mornings, and if you see frost inside the coop or damp bedding, the answer is more ventilation up high rather than less.
- February — Taper the light, do not cut it
- As sunrise creeps earlier, walk the timer back to match so the total day never shortens. Cutting supplemental light abruptly is the single fastest way to stop a flock laying.
The numbers worth remembering
- 8–12 weeks — how long an adult molt runs, and roughly how long the eggs stop.
- 14 hours of daylight — the point at which supplemental light starts to matter; 16 hours is the target to aim at.
- 12 square inches per bird — high, open winter vent area.
- 6 inches — winter bedding depth.
- 12 hours — the longest a laying hen should ever go without water.
- 0°F — roughly where healthy, fully feathered adult birds stop coping unaided.
