Do Chickens Need Heat in Winter?
Almost always no — and the heater is usually a bigger risk to your flock than the cold is. Here is what actually threatens chickens in winter, and what to do about it instead.

The short answer
A healthy, fully feathered adult chicken tolerates temperatures down to about 0°F (-18°C) with no supplemental heat at all. Chickens wear a down jacket they grew themselves: they fluff their feathers to trap a layer of warm air, tuck their heads under a wing, and roost pressed shoulder to shoulder so the flock shares body heat. The autumn molt exists precisely to hand them a fresh set of feathers before they need them.
So the honest answer to "how cold is too cold" is that in a dry, draft-free, well-ventilated coop, the temperature is rarely the thing that hurts a backyard flock. Moisture is.
The real enemy is damp, not cold
This is the single most useful thing to understand about winter chicken keeping, and it is the opposite of most people's instinct. Frostbite on combs and wattles is not simply "it got cold." It happens when humid air condenses on the tissue and then freezes.
Chickens are prolific producers of moisture — they breathe it out, and their droppings are roughly three-quarters water. Seal a coop up to keep it "cosy" and all of that water stays inside, the humidity climbs, and you have built the exact conditions frostbite needs. This is why frostbite is common in tight, warm-feeling coops and unusual in cold, airy ones.
The fix is ventilation above the birds, not heat. University of Maine Extension guidance works out to roughly 12 square inches of high open vent per bird — enough for damp air to rise and leave, positioned high enough that no cold air is blowing across the roost. Why heat lamps are the actual danger
If there is one thing to take from this page: a heat lamp is a serious fire risk, and coop fires kill entire flocks. Consider what a coop is — a wooden box packed with dry bedding, loose feathers and fine dust, usually some distance from the house, often unattended overnight. Then consider what a heat lamp is: a 250-watt bulb running at several hundred degrees, hanging from a clamp, at beak height for a bird that likes to fly up onto things.
Bulbs get knocked down. Clamps slip. Dust accumulates on the glass. Any one of those turns a heater into an ignition source, and it happens every winter to people who were being careful. Weigh that against the fact that the birds did not need the heat in the first place, and the maths gets very one-sided.
If you have genuinely concluded you need supplemental heat, use a flat radiant panel mounted above the roost instead. It runs at a far lower surface temperature, there is no bulb to shatter, and it warms the birds rather than the air. Never hang any heat source by its own cord.
The acclimation trap
There is a second, quieter argument against heating, and it is the one that persuades most experienced keepers. A flock that has cooled down gradually through autumn is acclimated — its birds have grown winter plumage and adjusted their metabolism. A flock kept in a heated coop has not.
That difference only matters on the night the heater fails. A blown bulb, a tripped breaker, or a winter storm power cut drops an unacclimated flock straight to the outdoor temperature with no adjustment at all — and that is genuinely dangerous in a way that a steady, gradual cold never was. Heat, if you use it, should be about taking the edge off an extreme cold snap, never about keeping the coop warm all winter.
Who does need extra warmth
"Chickens don't need heat" is a rule about healthy adult birds in a decent coop. The exceptions are real:
- Chicks. Not a judgement call — brooder temperature is a schedule, and ours is in the brooder temperature calculator.
- Sick, injured or underweight birds. A bird that cannot keep its own condition up cannot keep its own temperature up either.
- Birds mid-molt in a hard freeze. A half-feathered hen has lost the insulation the rule assumes she has.
- Large single combs in sustained deep cold. The vulnerable part is the comb, not the bird. Rose, pea and cushion combs sit tight to the skull and are far less exposed — which is why the lower-risk comb types are Rose Comb (Flat/Tight), Pea Comb (Small/Triple), Cushion / Walnut Comb.
- Sustained extreme cold. Below roughly -15°F, a radiant panel above the roost is a reasonable precaution for any flock.
What to do instead of heating
Everything on this list does more for a cold flock than a heater does, and none of it can catch fire or fail at 3am:
- Open the high vents. Damp air out, no draft at roost height.
- Block drafts at bird level. Wind moving across roosting birds strips the warm air they have trapped. Wind at the ridge does not.
- Deep, dry bedding. Insulates the floor and absorbs moisture. Wet bedding does the opposite of both.
- Wide, flat roosts. A bird that can sit flat covers her own toes with her body. A narrow round perch leaves them gripping and exposed.
- Liquid water, always. Dehydration is a bigger winter risk than cold, and it is the one that reliably stops laying — see keeping water from freezing.
- A handful of scratch before roosting. Digesting overnight generates body heat when they need it most.

A worked example
Eight hens in a 4×8 coop in Minnesota. Forecast is 5°F overnight with a light wind, and the flock is a mix of Barred Rocks and one Leghorn.
The temperature alone is inside what healthy adult birds handle unheated, so no heater. The questions worth asking instead are about moisture and exposure. Eight birds need roughly 96 square inches of high open vent — so the ridge vents stay open, even though it feels wrong to open a coop in February. Roost level gets checked for drafts and any gap at bird height gets blocked. The Leghorn's tall single comb is the one genuinely vulnerable thing in the coop, so it gets a thin coat of petroleum jelly before the freeze. Water goes on a heated base. Scratch at dusk. No supplemental heat, and nothing in the coop that can start a fire.
