The mistake almost everyone makes

A chicken's first adult molt comes at roughly 18 months old — not in the first autumn she sees. A pullet hatched in April comes into lay around 18–22 weeks, lays straight through her first winter, and only molts the following autumn — in this example, 2026-08.

This matters because it is the thing keepers get wrong. A hen that stops laying in her first November is almost certainly responding to shortening daylight, not molting. Treating it as a molt means waiting out a problem that a light on a timer would have solved — which is why this calculator is built on the bird's age rather than the season.

How this calculation works

Three sourced figures do all the work. Penn State Extension puts the annual adult molt at 8–12 weeks with an estimated 80% drop in egg output across that window without supplemental lighting. Point of lay is 18–22 weeks (USDA/UMN). And Penn State's aging-flock data gives production falling to 80% of peak in year two, 65% in year three and 50% from year four.

Eggs lost is the eggs a hen would have laid across the pause, at that year's rate, cut by 80%. For 6 hens laying 250 eggs a year, the first molt costs about 231 eggs. That figure falls each year — not because later molts are gentler, but because an older hen was laying fewer eggs to lose.

The schedule stops after three molts on purpose. The decline data resolves to "year four and beyond" as a single figure, so a fourth window would be modelling precision the source does not have.

What a molt actually looks like

Feathers are roughly 85% protein, and a bird rebuilding a full set diverts protein away from eggs to do it. That is the whole mechanism: the pause is not illness, it is a budgeting decision the hen makes on your behalf. Birds drop feathers from the head and neck first, then down the back and body.

A fast molter can be through it in eight weeks and is usually the better layer; a slow molter can look ragged for three months. Both are normal, and the range in the calculator covers both. What is not normal is feather loss with no regrowth, bald patches confined to the back or vent, or a bird that is also lethargic — those point somewhere other than molt, and are worth a vet's opinion rather than a calculator's.

Why do chickens molt in the fall?
Shortening daylight is the trigger. The moult is timed so a bird carries a fresh, complete set of feathers into winter, which is when insulation actually matters. That is also why moult and the winter laying slowdown arrive together and get blamed on each other — they share a cause rather than causing one another.
How many eggs will I lose to the molt?
The calculator works it out from your flock size and laying rate: eggs you would have had across the pause, reduced by 80 percent. For six hens laying 250 eggs a year each, a first moult costs roughly 230 eggs — the flock would have laid about 290 across a ten-week pause, and four fifths of those do not arrive. The figure falls each year after that, not because moults get easier but because an older hen was laying fewer eggs to begin with.
Should I feed extra protein during a molt?
Feathers are roughly 85 percent protein, so demand genuinely rises while a bird is rebuilding a full set. Extension guidance for layers is a 16 to 18 percent protein ration as the baseline; higher-protein treats like mealworms, cooked meat or sunflower seeds are the usual way keepers top that up during the window. Keep treats within the 90/10 rule regardless — a moulting hen still needs her balanced feed.
